The SR-71 Blackbird, world's fastest air breathing plane, was used to gather electronic intelligence for the military. If we'd been using this speed demon, China would never have captured a surveillance aircraft - the Blackbird outruns missiles - flying faster than a 30-06 bullet, 3.5 times the speed of sound. In 1981, its designer Kelly Johnson announced that it had outrun over 1000 enemy missile launches against it. The landing gear is the largest piece of titanium ever forged. Believe it or not, it was designed in the 1950s! The first Blackbird flew in early 1962 and was still outrunning missiles 30 years later.
